How it works
- With a few minutes of a person's audio (social media videos, messaging audios), their voice can be cloned with AI.
- The scammer calls or sends an audio with that voice: a relative in trouble who needs money now.
- The deception isn't technological: it's the urgency and the emotion.
Warning signs
- Extreme urgency and crying or distress.
- They ask you not to tell anyone.
- An unusual payment: gift cards, cryptocurrencies, Bizum, or immediate transfers to an unknown account.
Four defenses
- Hang up, even if the voice sounds identical.
- You call the usual number for that person.
- Agree on a secret word for the family. If they don't know it, it's not them.
- Ask something private that only the real person would know.
Share it
- Older adults are the favorite target. Show them this guide and agree on the secret word today.
- If you've already paid, call your bank as soon as possible and report it to the Police or the Civil Guard.
